You can change many characteristics of the text by using special sequences embedded in the text. The backslash

Notice that the size changes to make the "2" superscript smaller and larger occur before and after the up and down movement. This is because the extent of vertical motion depends on the character size -- the command
cm\s\u2\l\d
would not return
to the same baseline, since the up motion is done at a smaller character
size than the down motion.
